William R. Bryan

William R. Bryan was born in Georgia on October 11, 1842, and departed this life on
October 19, 1926. In 1865 he was married to Miss Matilda Clifton at Randolf, Alabama. To
this union ten children were born. Those who survive are Tom F. Bryan, Mrs. L. S. Powell,
and J. R. Bryan, all of Snyder. W. C. Bryan of Norman; Mrs. Polland and Mrs. Minor of
Kansas; and Mrs. Maxwell of Cooperton. Mr. Bryan moved from Alabama to Texas in 1863
and lived there until 1901 when he moved to Oklahoma at the time of the opening of the
Kiowa-Comanche-Apache reservation to white settlement. He filed on a claim southwest of
Snyder and lived there for many years, but his health failed him and he moved into town
and has resided here with us and he will be greatly missed by all for he made a trip up
town almost every day and it was a pleasure to meet him and to talk with him. He spent
many pleasant hours relating the early day happenings in Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma.
He was a veteran of the civil war and joined the Confederate army and spent many months
in that conflict. He was possessed with a wonderful memory and would relate accurately
many of the battles of the civil war. The funeral ceremonies were conducted at the
Methodist church of which the deceased had been a faithful member. Burial was made at
the Otter Creek cemetery, near the farm where had spent many happy and useful years.
In the passing of Mr. Bryan we have lost one of our very best citizens and one whom all
will miss every day.
